Steve Jobs once said, “It’s not the tools that you have faith in – tools are just tools. They work, or they don’t work. It’s people you have faith in or not.”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
Every business needs strong foundations to succeed. It’s common sense, but so often these days we see companies putting objects ahead of strategy. People get excited for the newest electronics, the fastest machine, the shiniest gadget…but does it help them win in the long run?
Now, don’t get us wrong, tools are great! When they are paired to a purpose, that is. The truth is, you can have the best tools in the world, but if you don’t have the right strategy you’re not going to meet your goals.
Let’s look at this a different way. Let’s say you go to a restaurant that’s invested a lot into their tools. We’re talking state of the art cooking ranges, robotic gadgets that work at the sound of your voice, gorgeous Japanese knives, the full Monty. The chef is in the back holding an expensive meat cleaver and you ask what he’s making.
He says spaghetti.
Now, doesn’t that make you stop and wonder if he knows what he’s doing? Is that really the tool he needs for the job, or is he so caught up in using it that he’s lost sight of the end goal?
Like our confusing chef, businesses fail to achieve their goals every day because they focus on the tools rather than on the strategy.
The thing is, you need to know what you are creating before you can choose the best tools. In the business world, it’s not about the tool you’re using but what you’re using it for. In other words, you need to know your strategy before picking out the tools that will get you there!
Take a page out of Steve Jobs’ book and place your faith in your people and strategy and let the tools come after.
